Aristocrat's Where's the Gold: the four games that carry the name

Search Aristocrat's Australian site for Where's the Gold today and you'll find a carnival game with a hammer and a clown, not the prospector pokie most people remember. The name now covers four Aristocrat games. Here is each one with its dates and features, and how to tell which one is in front of you.

The classic: the prospector pokie

This is the game with the bearded prospector, the Dynamite scatters and the mine symbols. Its help file, marked © Aristocrat Technologies Australia Pty Limited 2014, sets out the rules: you play 1 to 25 lines, three, four or five scattered Dynamite trigger the feature, you select a character, and you can “WIN up to 10 Free Games and up to 3 wild gold symbols” [4].

Aristocrat filed the WHERE’S THE GOLD trademark in Australia on 19 June 2003, for gaming machines among other goods [9]; review catalogues date the machine to the same year. Aristocrat’s online showroom later called it its “globally successful game that combines a player’s choice second screen feature with the chance to win more WILD symbols”, with “Medium” volatility and a return of “94% - 97%” [10].

In May 2013 Aristocrat announced a deal with NYX to take its games to regulated online markets in Europe: “The initial set of eight games, optimized for online play, include Zorro™, Queen Of The Nile 2™, Lucky 88™ & Where’s The Gold™” [11] [5]. That online version is the one still served, in demo mode, from NYX’s game server. The rules of the classic are covered in full on the free spins feature page and the paytable page.

The classic isn’t in Aristocrat’s current game catalogue, which lists only the three newer versions below.

Cash Express Luxury Line: Where’s the Gold

Aristocrat described this version as “one of the first titles released in the Cash Express Luxury Line game family”. It keeps the classic’s pick: “players get the choice in selecting 1 character from 5 options and collect between 3 – 10 free games and/or 1, 2 or 3 Symbols”. In NSW and the ACT it came in 50-line, 25-line and 5-line configurations [2].

At least one Australian casino names it today: The Star Gold Coast lists the Cash Express Luxury Line on its main gaming floor “with three classic titles… Where’s the Gold, Queen of the Nile, 50 Lions” [8].

In Victoria, the regulator’s records show this version approved from July 2022 as a standalone, SAP and linked game [12].

Where’s The Gold? Jackpots

Released in the US in April 2023 and in Europe in September 2023, this version comes in Buffalo, Geisha and Pompeii themes. Aristocrat describes “an increase in base game and jackpot multipliers” and a Bonus Wheel feature [3]. It isn’t listed for Australia.

Jackpot Carnival Deluxe: Where’s the Gold

This is the page Aristocrat’s Australian site shows under the name today. “Jackpot Carnival Deluxe is one of the most iconic game groups in Australian history, and with Where’s the Gold we bring all the excitement of carnival games with more fun wins and prizes. Bash the hammer to raise the prizes and reach the top to a spin a winna.” Its features are free games “with chance to be awarded additional free spins”, a hammer feature and a clown feature [1]. Aristocrat dates its release in Australia and New Zealand to 15 April 2024.

How to tell which one you’re playing

  • Prospector, Dynamite, mine shafts, a character pick: the classic, or the Cash Express Luxury Line version if the cabinet carries the golden-train Cash Express theme and lets you switch between several games.
  • Hammer, clown, carnival theme: the Jackpot Carnival Deluxe version.
  • Buffalo, Geisha or Pompeii art: Where’s The Gold? Jackpots, which you’d meet overseas or online, not in an Australian venue.

In Western Australia the name appears in a legal document too. Crown Perth’s approved rules for the authorised game “Video Bingo” list “Where’s the Gold (Aristocrat Variations 01 - 07, 99)” [7], and Crown’s own page for the game promises “an exciting Free Game & Jackpot Feature” [6]. Which of the four versions that is, Crown’s pages don’t say. More on venues in where the machine still stands.

Questions people ask
